These Save the Dates for a destination wedding in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico feel traditional and classy and unique and weighty. Using really elegant typefaces, but combining them in a way that is slightly playful is super exciting to me. And probably to most everyone else, right? RIGHT?

They’re 1 color on the front and I made a map of Puerto Rico that is blind debossed onto the back. They’re printed onto my favorite – Crane 220#, with a shimmery little gold envelope.

These invitations were for a wedding I had the delight of attending last week. The reception took place at the Rialto Square Theater in Joliet, which was the most gorgeous place and was a great source of inspiration for the design. Nina and Bryan wanted something fancy and elegant but not super traditional. This wedding was a party and the invites needed to convey that spirit while still keeping it classy. You can see their Save the Dates here.

They were selected as a winner for the FPO Awards. I’m still kind of thrilled about that.

Oh! Also? My friend Julia totally passed out in the middle of the ceremony. She was fine, she just has a habit of passing out in church. We think it means she should go more.

Volaris is the fastest growing Mexican airline and this year they introduced a cool new inflight magazine, V de Volaris. It was a treat to design the May/June 2011 issue, and this article, about the fashion industry in Mexico City was one of my all time favorites to work on. A perfect storm of cool clothes, amazing images and edgy client. One of the stores featured was Goodbye Folk, a vintage boutique and hair studio that creates their own really incredible pieces. Total hipster deliciousness. If I’m ever in DF that’s where I’m spending my money.

These sweet yellow and green invitations are so soft and lovely in person. I fully adore them.

Amanda Reynolds is a super talented and sweet photographer. She has been photographing weddings with her husband Nate for the last few years and is currently expanding her brand and doing more lifestyle/travel/fashion work. Especially the travel. Amanda has wanderlust like you’ve never even seen before.

I took inspiration from vintage maps, playing with different cartography elements, while still keeping things clean and modern. With a blind deboss and a slight varnish I showed a bit of Amanda’s beloved Italy on the back of the card. Placing the website and a compass rose in the middle of the Terranean Sea was a fun touch.

The printing was tricky, there were lots of tiny details but I’m thrilled with how they turned out. Thanks, as always, to Bon-a-Tirer for both patience and printing awesomeness.

I also designed the website, which was a fun place to expand the look of the brand. If you have wanderlust yourself, or are looking for a travel photographer, pop over to her site and say hi.

Paul and I went on a road trip over the weekend to meet up with some friends and I came home with a weird assortment of road tripish-type things. A bad painting of a bird for $10. Salt water taffy. Sponges from Tarpon Springs (only the sponge capital OF THE WORLD), with prices that were clearly made up on the fly. But whatever, the video that I watched about sponge harvesting (as you do) told me that I could use them to clean my face, or my boat or even my horses. So me and my boat and my horses are in business. Also a 100-year-old dictionary that I have feelings of love for. And some flea market incense. And if I’m ever going to teach you one thing in life it’s that you should never buy crappy flea market incense on a road trip. Because you’ll want to barf on the way home but you’ll have too much pride to throw it away. But you will eventually throw it away anyway because when you wake up the next morning your whole apartment smells like flea market.

I’m a handmade paper enthusiast. Like I can’t even bare to throw the scraps away. I put them all into storage. Paper hoarding. It’s a real thing. And so I’m really excited to show you these invitations. My client, Joan (who was delightful), had a vision, and it was amazing to work with her to actualize her ideas. She wanted something that conveyed an elegant beach wedding but that stayed away from the usual visual cues. No starfish here, thanks very much. A slightly abstract palm leaf was blind debossed onto awesomely thick handmade paper. And you can’t tell here, but if you take the paper out in the sun it kind of sparkles. IT SPARKLES, YOU GUYS. Just a little. Like a vampire. Only not obnoxious and awkward.

For the type we looked to Deco typefaces from the 20′s and 30′s. Everything was tied together with thin palm fronds that I found outside. While dodging security and landscapers and neighbors. You just don’t want to be seen frantically stuffing palm fronds into a sack. I think it’s probably frowned upon.
